On Saturday, I was delighted to meet Máire Treanor, author and expert on Clones lace.
Máire collects, designs, teaches and writes about this historic form of Irish crochet lace.
She was showing her collection as part of a workshop in the Constant Knitter.
The collection includes very old Venetian needle lace, old Irish pieces, and related contemporary pieces from Ireland, Italy, France and the Ukraine.
It was amazing to see these treasures up close and to photograph them – click images for bigger versions.

The technique is fascinating – it’s like drawing motifs and connecting them with threads to form a fabric – I’m very inspired to do some design work.
